Cloud Services

What are cloud services?

You can think of the cloud as being a "hard disk in the sky" - hence the terminology - and originally file storage was the only cloud service available. Today, all sorts of productivity applications are available from cloud services as "apps", such as email (e.g. Gmail and Hotmail), word processing and spreadsheets, and web site design tools being just a few of those you'll find.

DropBox was the original cloud service, but these are offered by all the major technology companies. Microsoft has OneDrive and Microsoft 365, Apple offers iCloud and iDrive, and Google has Google Drive and G Suite.

Why use cloud services?

If you store your files in the cloud rather than on your computer's hard drive, you can access the files from any device - such as computer, laptop, or smartphone - and from anywhere you have an internet connection. You can also easily share files with other users of your cloud service, such as family members or business colleagues, which saves cluttering email inboxes and having multiple copies of files stored in different locations.
